Described by many as a once-in-a-lifetime drive and by some as a white knuckle journey, no trip to Glacier is complete without a drive along Going-to-the-Sun Road. An engineering marvel and National Historic Landmark, this 51-mile alpine highway traverses the park from east to west, crossing over the Continental Divide while providing awe-inspiring views.

Discussions around building a trans-mountain road began as early as 1912, but planning and construction lasted for two decades before the road was finally opened during a dedication ceremony that was attended by over 4,000 people on July 15, 1933. Extensive research and surveying were completed before construction began to ensure the design worked in harmony with the landscape and natural environment as the road eventually wound its way up to the highest point of 6,646 feet at Logan Pass.

Once you factor in countless viewpoints, turnouts, trailheads, and opportunities to spot wildlife, this 2-hour drive easily can turn into a full day of adventure. Make the most of it with our handpicked collection of essential Sun Road resources to help you prepare before you arrive.
