Fans of Glacier's historic Red Buses can take home their own mini model with a 1936 White Motor Company Model 706 Tour Bus replica. Between 1936 and 1940, the National Park purchased 35 of the Model 706's, they were a feat of engineering at the time with the ability to accelerate uphill with 16 passengers. The red color was inspired by ripe Mountain Ash Berries that can be found throughout the park and samples of the berries were even sent to the factory to ensure the color was matched as precisely as possible. Although these vintage buses have had automatic transmissions since 1989, the buses historically had a standard transmission which earned drivers the nickname "Jammers" due to the sound of the gears jamming when they shifted. Glacier boasts the largest fleet of "Reds" still in operation with 33 of these iconic buses still operating today as they provide tours to more than 60,000 visitors annually.
