You might be asking, what is a Dark Sky Park? Glad you asked! A Dark Sky Park is a location that has been certified as a place that offers an exceptional view of the night sky and provides a protected nocturnal environment for scientific and educational reasons, cultural heritage, and public enjoyment. Light pollution is hard to escape, Dark Sky Parks aim to preserve the night sky by monitoring and recording night sky quality, retrofitting light fixtures to use dark-sky friendly lighting, and establishing ways to maintain the park's natural darkness for generations to come. We all have seen the glow from city lights at night and the effects of light pollution not only make it difficult to see stars, it also disrupts ecosystems and wildlife, has impacts on human health, uses excess energy and more. Glacier National Park has been recognized as an International Dark Sky Park since 2017 and has some pretty incredible night sky viewing opportunities. In addition to Star Parties in the summer at Logan Pass, there are also nightly astronomy programs in Apgar and St Mary. This sticker celebrates the dark skies in Glacier, if you've been lucky enough to stare up at the sky and enjoy the stars with minimal light interference, you know how special it can be.
