First Rangers details the exploits of two of these men, told mostly in their own words. Written in the saddle while riding along the trail, or on a log at camp, or at a table in a dimly lit cabin, these stories bring to life a bygone era. Frank Liebig and Fred Herrig were the first forest rangers assigned to protect the wild country that became Glacier National Park. Their job was to stop wildfires, timber thieves, squatters, and poachers. Supremely suited to their work, Frank and Fred were skilled woodsmen, natural leaders, and men of rare courage and integrity. Their legacy lives on in the park's protected wild lands and in the ethos of today's forest and park rangers.

160 pages, softcover

This title was the book club selection for March 2023, you can watch the Zoom book club discussion here.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0714/5311/4437/files/Untitled_design_57__90647.1716406321.1280.1280.jpg?v=1777406353
four-fifths-a-grizzly
Four Fifths a Grizzly

Veteran environmental writer Douglas Chadwick presents an engaging series of personal essays that argue for the amazing interconnectedness of nature, advocating that the path toward conservation begins with how we see our place in the world. Gathered from decades of observing and reporting, Four-Fifths a Grizzly challenges anyone to consider whether we are separate from or part of nature. It approaches nature from a scientific angle, showing that human DNA is not all that different from any other creature. We have a surprisingly close relationship with grizzly bears, sharing 80 percent of our DNA, 60 percent similar to salmon, 40 percent the same as many insects, and 24 percent of our genes match those of a wine grape. At the same time, our bodies are teeming with organisms, separate from ourselves but upon which we are dependent for survival. Chadwick explains this all in fun, accessible stories. Answering the question of how we can change this era’s trajectory, Chadwick presents examples of successful recoveries of species and habitats, with the thought that “we really can save a whole lot in a hurry.”

Hardcover

This book was the January 2023 Glacier National Park Book Club selection. The victim was a journalist who had been interviewing reclusive researcher Reeve Landon about his work for a program that trains dogs to track scientific data. Now Reeve is the prime suspect. Without friends or family to turn to, Reeve seeks help from his ex, FBI agent, Ali Paige, the mother of his young daughter. Though Ali is not assigned the case, she is deeply invested, driven by the idea that if she can find out what really happened, she might save Emily from the trauma of losing her father. Meanwhile, Reeve feels reckless and panicked. Assuming the worst possible outcome, he flees into the woods with his dog. As the evidence mounts against him, and Reeve’s resources dwindle, Ali isn’t sure how far she’ll go to find answers – and what if the truth is more than she can handle? Propulsive and suspenseful, evoking the stark, breathtaking beauty of Glacier National Park, A Sharp Solitude shows that we can never outrun our demons, even in the vast, indomitable wild. Christine Carbo is a teacher and writer living in Whitefish, Montana with her husband, Jamie, their three kids, one dog and one cat. Her love of Glacier National Park inspired her first novel, The Wild Inside, which was published in early 2015.

368 pages

This was the July 2023 Glacier National Park Conservancy Book Club selection. Between 1933 and 1942, a total of thirteen CCC camps were located on both sides of the Continental Divide that bisects the park roughly from north to south. CCC-I.D. (Indian Division) camps also existed along the eastern edge of the park on the Blackfeet Reservation. CCC "boys" were employed in fighting forest fires and clearing areas of burned trees, clearing brush and debris, sawing logs, creating trails, building fire lookout towers, constructing Park Service buildings, assisting with bridge construction, and building phone lines to connect east and west sides of the park. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt visited in August 1934 and gave one of his famous radio "fireside chats" from the park, in which he praised the efforts of the CCC in helping improve the country's national parks. Chapters by author David R Butler examine CCC camp life, the nature of the work carried out by the CCC boys, structures built in the park by the CCC, and FDR's visit.

128 pages, softcover

This was the November 2023 Glacier National Park Conservancy Book Club selection.
