“Connecting with the land has been a reconnection with myself and my people,” says Josh Swift (Salish, Kootenai), designer of the Calling Mountains Throw Blanket. “When we’re in nature, we have the chance to learn from the mountain peaks, and it reminds us to listen more deeply to what the peaks and valleys in our lives have to tell us.”
A hiker, climber, backpacker, and snowboarder, Josh designed the Calling Mountains Throw Blanket in honor of both his own heritage and an awareness of the significance of America’s majestic mountains to Native people across the country. “Going out on the land in Montana with my grandfather has been hugely important to my reconnection with my people,” shares Josh. “The colors of this blanket come from the rock pebbles in Flathead Lake—a place of deep significance to the Salish and Kootenai people.” The mountains on the blanket are just a few of the culturally significant mountains across the country, and include Denali (Alaska), Humphrey’s Peak (Arizona), Blanca Peak (Colorado), Mount Whitney (California), Mount Rainier (Washington), and the Blue Ridge Mountains (North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama).
